Last week, we began two digit addition with adding multiples of ten. We also did two digit addition with one digit addition. Neither of these involved regrouping, but they do have multiple steps. The kids did great! This week, we have taken on Subtraction with Two Digit Numbers and multiples of ten. Once again, the kids have grasped this concept and have taken off running! When I teach these concepts, I am also teaching strategies to solve these like: Counting on and Back on a Number line, Model Drawing using tens and ones, and Using a Hundreds Chart. These are visual reminders of how we solve for the answers.
Another skill that we are working on is answering questions by writing a complete sentence answer. In first grade and beyond, this is an important skill. It is not just enough to just write short answers. They need to be able to restate the question in a sentence answer. Please have them do this on Homework Sheets as well for extra reinforcement.
This week we are doing an author study of Helen Lester's Tacky the Penguin Books. They are adorable and have lots of good retelling, compare and contrast, and prediction skills. We are also learning about Penguins at the same time. Later this week, we will be learning about Groundhog's Day and groundhogs. We will of course be making our predictions as to whether he will or will not see his shadow. This ties in with our science concept of light and shadows as well.
Don't forget that we have our Mad Minute Math Quiz on Thursday, Spelling Test on Friday, and Homework Packet is due on Friday! I continue to be amazed with great scores on these quizzes and tests! Keep that up! Also, I love the neatness I see on Homework as well! 2nd Grade teachers will LOVE and appreciate this! Don't forget that all important reading nightly as well! We want to continue to improve on our fluency and comprehension before 2nd grade!
Thanks for all you do! Here's to a great end of the month and beginning of the next! Information about Valentine's Day will go home on Thursday, February 1st!
